Axed Nine presenter Amber Sherlock

Axed Nine presenter Amber Sherlock has blamed “streamlining” for her forced exit following 20 years at the network as a TV host and journalist, declaring it’s the “end of an era for dedicated 6pm weather presenters”.

On Thursday, the Sydney-based personality offered a farewell to fans on social media which followed her absence from the screen on Monday.

It comes as the network dishes out a raft of redundancies across its broadcast and streaming division.

“Nearly 20 years anywhere is a milestone, but to be in your lounge rooms every evening has been a privilege,” Sherlock wrote.

“From my early days as a finance journalist, to reading the Qantas news and becoming the inaugural newsreader for Weekend Today, I’ve been fortunate to present across almost every bulletin including the Morning News, Afternoon News, 6pm News and Late News.

“Most recently, I’ve been part of the 6pm Sydney news team alongside Peter Overton and James Bracey. Together, we’ve proudly won the ratings for the last 15 years, a testament to the Sydney news team.”

Sherlock posted a photo of herself alongside the aforementioned Overton and Bracey from Sydney’s Nine studio desk.

The outgoing journalist said she was presented with alternative roles that she turned down.

“Over the years, I’ve made lifelong friends, shared countless laughs, and celebrated many milestones. I’ve enjoyed 30 years in Australian television built on hard work, grit and resilience and have always believed that dedication pays off,” Sherlock added.

“While I was offered the possibility of a few other roles, it makes sense to step away now and look at something fresh.”

As 50 jobs appear destined for the chopping block at Nine, Media Week reported Adelaide newsreader Kate Collins has already been cut, along with Queensland sports reporter Jonathan Uptin.

And while long-running Nine presenter Livinia Nixon called time on her career last week, Sherlock suggested the skies were darkening as Nixon and other colleagues departed en masse.

“For a nation obsessed with weather, I’ve loved bringing a little sunshine to every bulletin. Just like Melbourne turned a bit greyer with Livinia’s departure announced last week, Sydney’s feeling a little cloudier now too 🌧️,” Sherlock said.

“It seems like it’s the end of an era for dedicated 6pm weather presenters as ‘streamlining’ seems to be the prevailing forecast. Good luck to whoever is brave enough to tackle the new BOM website 🤣”.’

Aussies might recall the 2017 “jacketgate” saga in which Sherlock was caught on camera calling out her colleague Julie Snook for wearing a similar all-white white outfit to hers and demanding she throw on a jacket, as their expert interviewee sat waiting externally on camera also in white.

The mother of two said she’d be unveiling “exciting projects” soon, and would embrace her new horizon with the support of family.

Despite not being afforded the opportunity to formally farewell viewers, Sherlock’s announcement was pre-empted by Sydney colleague Georgie Gardner who let slip her colleague’s departure on Wednesday night in what appeared to be an off-script moment.

“Before we go tonight, we’d like to extend a farewell to our colleague Amber Sherlock,” Gardner told viewers.

“For a number of years, Amber has been a valued member of the news team, bringing us our daily weather reports on behalf of Nine News.”

“I’d like to thank Amber for her contribution, and we wish her and her family all the very best.”
